Have you marked your calendars for
our fashion show & silent auction yet?

Join us on Sunday, March 14
for "Canines on the Catwalk!"

We'll start the afternoon with light hors d'ouvres and a drink as we browse the unbelievable selection of silent auction items and begin to place out bids.  Then sit down with friends and make new ones as you enjoy lunch.  Once we've all eaten, we'll start the fashion show, featuring clothing from our very own Animal Lifeline Thrift Shop!  And as this is an Animal Lifeline event, you can be sure this won't be a frou-frou affair -- expect a lot of fun and laughter as our canines escort some out-of-the-ordinary models down the runway!

Have concerns about missing a game during March Madness?  NO WORRIES!  If you need to take a break from the festivities to check the score, two bartenders will be manning the cash bar downstairs!

Pet Adoption 101:
How to Adopt the Perfect Pet!

Presented by Animal Lifeline & Petfinder

A workshop designed to provide you with all the information you need to know, what you need to do and what you should watch out for in the adoption process.

Rescuing and adopting a pet is a wonderful way to bring an animal into your life, but like anything else, understanding the process and making sure you are adopting a healthy animal that is right for your family can be difficult.

Join Denise Bash, Founder of Animal Lifeline, a national support organization for rescues, shelters and municipal groups and Kim Saunders, Vice President Shelter Outreach, Petfinder, and author of the Adopted Dog Bible, for an incredible program that will discuss the following:

  • Where to find the right animal
  • How to find a reputable rescue
  • What you should expect from the rescue process (fees, services)
  • Pre-adoption Preliminaries
  • Interview questions you should ask your rescue service
  • How to prepare your family and your home for your new pet
  • Early warning signs of a bad placement and how to handle it
  • Training, Basic Nutrition, Exercise and Grooming Tips
Click here for more details or to register online!

Book Signing: The Adopted Dog Bible

An autographed copy of The Adopted Dog Bible will be available for purchase at the workshop at a discounted rate. This book is an incredible resource for learning everything about adopting a dog through petfinder.com as well as caring for the dog after adoption.

Speaking of inspired animal advocates, we'd like to tell you about about Hannah, one of our volunteers.  She saw a need in the animal rescue community and took the initiative to help meet that need.

What follows here is a letter Hannah wrote to reach out within her community, a photo of our young volunteer, and a note from her proud mom and fellow Animal Lifeline volunteer, Brenda.

Animal Lifeline is so lucky to have the support of such a special family!

Collars 4 Canines

Dear Cold Spring Hunt Families,

My name is Hannah.  I am a 6th grader at Cold Spring Elementary School, and am also a member of your neighborhood.
I volunteer at an animal rescue called Animal Lifeline.  The president of the organization, Denise Bash, runs a transport to several Southern states where the population of homeless dogs is at a crisis level.  The transport brings homeless dogs North to find homes.  Once the dogs have passed a behavioral test to be sure they're adoptable, there is only one thing they need to be allowed on the transport:  a collar.
My friends and I are working hard to find collars to send to the dogs.  If you would like to help us, please consider donating a collar.  It could be of any size, any color...there are a lot of dogs that need them.
There will be a blue cooler on my front step.  It will be there between now and Christmas.  You can put your collars in there so they stay dry.
Those dogs need loving homes for the holidays and for the rest of their lives.  If you choose to donate, one collar could save a dog's life and help a sad, lonely dog find a loving home.  Thank you so much for helping.

Sincerely,
       Hannah

Hannah & collars

(Brenda's note)

The picture shows Hannah with our own little Bichon, Sadie.

Hannah wrote the letter and distributed it to the 262 houses in our neighborhood.  She and four of her friends spent most of a Sunday afternoon walking from mailbox to mailbox to get the letters out.  The response was overwhelming!  When even a 3% return is considered good for a "mass mailing" campaign, Hannah's letter brought back a 44% return - along with many, many notes of encouragement and thanks for what she was doing to help the animals.  We were so thankful for the response that Hannah wrote and distributed a SECOND letter, letting everyone know how many collars were collected and thanking them for their donations.

We would like to congratulate Hannah and her helpers, Julia, Nicole,Taylor and Nathan, for their incredibly successful efforts in their Collars 4 Canines campaign!

These collars have made their way to several locations in need: Animal Lifeline foster families; Last Chance Ranch in Richlandtown; the Mary Ann Morris Animal Society in Bamberg, SC (where our own Delaware Valley College students worked on an outreach trip over their holiday break); and the Ritchie County Animal Shelter in Harrisville, WV which recently suffered a devastating loss of life and supplies due to fire.

Thank you for all your efforts, Hannah!

HaasMeet Haas!

Poor Haas was dumped at a very high kill shelter. This darling setter/shepherd mix is lanky with a feathered tail, longer ears and a wavy coat. He is only 5-6 months old and was housebroken before he was dumped, but may need a refresher course.

Haas loves everyone!!!  He is great with others and just wants to play -- he would make an excellent family dog.

You can see video of Haas on his Petfinder page, and if you'd like to arrange to meet him, please fill out an application on our website.  This very sweet, gentle boy is one big doofy puppy who deserves a loving home!

UPDATE:  Edy is still on the loose, but she was spotted in Richlandtown yesterday.  People are in the woods calling for her right now, and lost pet agencies are posting flyers and robo-calling the surrounding area to let neighbors know to keep an eye out for Edy.

We hope to be able to share good news about our missing friend in our next newsletter!
